Camp Tygart is an amazing place to see a large variety of wildlife. Camp Tygart is home to squirrels, deer, turkeys and a very large population of Gopher Tortoises. There are many Gopher Tortoise burrows along the main road to the Pipkin Center and at the edge of the wooded areas surrounding the softball/soccer field. Georgia designated the endangered Gopher Tortoise as the official state reptile in 1989. Native to Georgia, the Gopher Tortoise belongs to a group of land tortoises that originated in North America 60 million years ago. Please stay at least 25 feet from any Gopher Tortoise burrow.
